Roeland Merks awarded 1.5 M€ Vici Grant for project on tumor vasculature normalization

The Dutch national research organization NWO has awarded Roeland Merks a Vici grant for his proposal ‘Mathematical insights into the repair of tumor vasculature’. Blood vessels in tumors are leaky and chaotic. The resulting poor blood flow makes cancer cells more aggressive and complicates chemotherapy.  In this project, Merks will combine mathematical simulations and lab experiments to design strategies for blood vessel repair. Promising targets are abnormal tumor metabolism and the mechanics of fibers that connect cells together. Roeland Merks works at CWI and Leiden University.
