On 27th February 2015, Roeland Merks delivered his inaugural speech (oratie) at Leiden University as professor of Multiscale Mathematical Biology at Leiden University. In his lecture Merks described how the use of mathematics and computer simulations helps to "put the organism back together again" (Noble, 2006) and come to a real understanding of biological mechanisms. Key to this are the mathematics and physics of collective cell behavior and an analysis of the hierarchical structuring of biological systems. Interviews with Merks on his research and inaugural lecture were published in Mare, Leiden University's weekly paper, and on the Leiden University website (in Dutch). The text of the oratie "Het molecuul, de cellen, en het weefsel: de wiskunde van groei en vorm in tijden van Big Data" (in Dutch)  is available at the Leiden University repository.
